Located in the Cabo Cruz Community, a rural site in the southern end of Cuba, in the Municipality of Niquero, Granma Province.

The House of the Lighthouse Keeper is a single-story, quadrangular building with masonry walls and a tiled roof.  It has more than 15 rooms that are distributed around an interior patio, through which they communicate through an O-shaped corridor, leaving a terrace at the end of the building that gives its views facing the sea.

It is one of the few places that maintains the name given by the great Admiral Christopher Columbus.

In 14th century the area was the scene of aboriginal uprisings and during the 17th and 18th centuries it was frequented by buccaneers, smugglers and pirates.

In March 1862, the construction of the dwelling house for the lighthouse keeper and the garrison of the military post began.

The lighthouse, whose real name is "Faro Vargas", has a height of 31m and 81cm;  Its construction began in 1862 and ended in 1871, carried out by the Corps of Engineers of Public Works.

Expeditions were received through this area during the independence struggles of 1968 and 1995 in the Little War.

The lights of the lighthouse guided the expedition members of the Yacht Granma at dawn on December 2, 1956.
