Jorge Berlanga Acosta. Outstanding Cuban researcher. Project manager of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba since April 19, 2018, being re-elected in the extraordinary session of the IX Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power held on October 10, 2019, a position he will hold until the year 2023.
He was born in Bayamo, the capital municipality of Granma province. He had a normal childhood like any other Cuban pioneer.
Studies
He received a scholarship at the Boris Luis Santa Coloma provisional vocational school, from the Veguita (Yara) Food Plan. Later he studied at the José Martí vocational school in Holguín, and then went on to study Veterinary Medicine at what was then called ISCAB, today the University of Granma.
Work history
He assumes the tasks related to research since September 1, 1991 at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. He belongs to the biomedical area, dedicated to the diagnosis and therapy of diseases that afflict human beings. He is dedicated to researching tissue healing and regeneration.
Investigative trajectory
He begins to work on the pharmacology of the topical application of the growth factor (today Hebermin cream, back then Facdermin). Between 1994 and 1995 he attended a scholarship in the best healing and plastic surgery laboratories in Canada. This scholarship had a significant impact on his training as a professional and allowed him to meet opinion leaders on the subject.
In the last five years of the 90's he began to work on the pharmacology of epidermal growth factor injection, which gave rise to the experimental or hypothetical bases of Heberprot-P. Developing a group of experiments, the first one gave rise to the circumstantial or hypothetical basis of Herberprot-P, later obtaining excellent results at the international level. The emergence of Heberprot-P, the only one of its kind in the world, changes the paradigms in the management of diabetic foot ulcers.
Political career
In the Constitutive Session of the IX Legislature on April 19, 2018, the members of Parliament elected him as a member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba.
He was re-elected in the extraordinary session of the IX Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power held on October 10, 2019, a position he will hold until 2023.
