He belonged to a family of eight poor brothers, who, with tenacity and efforts, became teachers, learned the English language and practiced various jobs.

Winner of the 2008 National Prize for Pedagogy and the Outstanding Educator of the 20th Century status, he stood out as a researcher, lecturer, and great connoisseur of the life and work of Cuba's National Hero, José Martí.

Owner of a vast culture, he also stood out in the locution and production of radio programs, he is considered one of the initiators of the sports chronicle on the Island, and he deserved the National Radio Award in 2009.

For decades he wrote and hosted spaces dedicated to disseminating Martí's thought and jazz.

He was founder, writer and member of the Board of Directors of the cultural magazine Acento, which in the second half of the 1940s had the collaboration of the most important figures of Cuban letters of the time.

Grandson of Amelia Montero, one of the 12 young women who sang at the official premiere of the National Anthem, on November 8, 1868, Víctor also worked as a barber, telegraph operator, translator and stenographer, among other tasks.
